Screenings aren't the same as exams.
The AOA recommends a child's first eye assessment between 6 and 12 months, at least one exam between ages 3 and 5, an exam before first grade, and yearly exams through school age.
Oklahoma schools conduct vision screenings, but a screening can miss problems like focusing issues or amblyopia. Signs your child should be seen: squinting, covering one eye, sitting close to the TV, avoiding reading, headaches, or an eye that turns in or out.
